"Trying to lose weight? Just eat less and move more!"
That probably sounds familiar if you've ever tried to drop a few kilos. And for those trying to put on size, the exact opposite advice. But how much less, and how much more?
If that question has left you confused and your body composition progress has stalled, you're not alone.
This is exactly where your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), the number that tells you how many calories your body burns just to stay alive, comes in.
While RMR can sound like something only serious bodybuilders need to worry about, it's one of the most useful measures for anyone, even if you're not training for anything in particular. It's the foundation underneath every calorie target you'll ever set, and knowing this number can help you figure out whether you're eating and moving at the right level for your goals.
What Is Resting Metabolic Rate?
Your body is constantly burning energy, even when you are doing nothing at all.
Your RMR is the energy cost of existing: it is what your body needs to burn to breathe, circulate blood, regulate temperature, repair tissue and keep your brain and organs running, even at complete rest.
For most people, RMR makes up roughly 60–75% of Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). That means the majority of the calories you burn each day have nothing to do with the gym; they come from simply being. That's why getting this number right matters: if the foundation of your calorie target is wrong, everything you build on top of it, whether that's a fat-loss plan or a bulk, is wrong too.
How Is RMR Measured?

You will typically:
- Arrive rested and fasted, having avoided intense exercise, caffeine and large meals beforehand.
- Lie or sit still in a quiet room for around 30–40 minutes, without talking or using your phone to keep the reading accurate.
- Breathe normally into a mask or canopy connected to a metabolic analysis system.
- Have your oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production measured breath by breath throughout.
From there, your metabolic rate is calculated directly from your body's actual gas exchange. Generating energy requires oxygen, so measuring exactly how much you consume and how much carbon dioxide you produce in return, reveals how many calories you're burning.
This is a fundamentally different approach from the calculators most people use online, which rely on predictive equations rather than a direct measurement. Even many bioelectrical impedance analysis machines, like InBody, rely on the same kind of predictive equations to estimate your RMR from your height, weight, age and sex.
The problem? These formulas are built on population averages, but everyone's metabolism responds differently. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis found that even the best-performing predictive equations only classified around 80% of individuals within ±10% of their actual measured RMR, while several commonly used equations significantly over- or underestimated RMR altogether (O'Neill et al., 2023).
A calculator doesn't know your metabolism. A test does.
At FORGED by ReFormd, we measure your RMR directly using indirect calorimetry, the same gold-standard, lab-grade metabolic analysis technology behind our VO₂max Testing, via the CORTEX 21 Performance T portable cardiopulmonary testing system.

What RMR Doesn't Tell You…
RMR is one input, not the whole equation. A few things it doesn't capture on its own:
- Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE): Your RMR doesn't include the calories burned through daily movement, structured exercise, or digesting food. Your real calorie needs are your RMR plus all of that layered on top.
- Fuel Utilisation and Metabolic Flexibility: Based on your Respiratory Quotient (RQ), we can tell whether your body is preferentially burning fat or carbohydrate at rest. A lower RQ generally means your body taps into fat stores more efficiently, which can help explain why two people on the same deficit lose fat at different rates.
- Day-to-Day Fluctuation: Sleep quality, stress, illness and even a hard training session the day before can shift the number somewhat.
This is exactly why our Exercise Specialists sit alongside every test. At FORGED by ReFormd, your results include your RQ and a TDEE estimate based on your physical activity factor, refined through a consultation to layer on context and turn the numbers into something you can actually act on.

RMR testing is useful for anyone who wants a real number instead of a guess, especially:
- Anyone whose weight loss has stalled despite consistent effort and tracking.
- Anyone trying to gain weight or build muscle who feels like they’re already eating "a lot" but still isn’t moving the scale.
- Physique and strength athletes cutting or bulking who want targets built on their own metabolism rather than a formula.
- Endurance and HYROX athletes who need an accurate baseline to fuel training and racing properly.
- Anyone who has dieted repeatedly and wants to check whether their metabolism has adapted downward.
Whatever the goal, measuring your RMR directly rather than estimating it gives you an individual baseline to build from, and a benchmark to track as your training, body composition and weight change over time. It gives you a better answer to one of the most common nutrition questions: how much should I actually be eating?

Once your RMR is measured, it becomes the anchor point for your total daily calorie target, regardless of which direction you're trying to move.

- For fat loss: Your calorie target is built as a controlled deficit below your true total daily expenditure, rather than an arbitrary number pulled from an app. This helps protect against the deficit being too aggressive, which can slow progress rather than speed it up.
- For maintenance: Your RMR plus your activity level gives you a realistic number to hold your weight steady, which is useful context on its own and essential if you're coming off a diet or a bulk.
- For weight gain: Many people trying to gain size underestimate how much they actually need. An accurate RMR means your surplus is built on your real number, helping you gain more consistently without excessive, unnecessary fat gain along the way.
Instead of spending weeks guessing at a number and wondering why nothing's moving, do the test once and know exactly where you stand.
Conclusion
Whether you are trying to lose weight, gain weight, or simply eat with more confidence, knowing your actual RMR gives you a far clearer starting point than any online calculator.
FORGED by ReFormd offers RMR testing in Singapore using indirect calorimetry to measure your metabolism directly, rather than estimating it from a generic formula.
RMR also pairs well with our other testing services, and is included in our Signature Health Bundle for a complete, evidence-based picture of your metabolism, body composition and fitness in a single visit.
