What Does VO2max Actually Tell You?

Back to Blog

When athletes hear about VO₂max, one of the first questions they ask is:

“What does this number really mean for me?”

VO₂max is often described as the size of your “aerobic engine”, which is a useful starting point, but the result doesn’t tell you everything about your fitness or predict exactly how you’ll perform in a race. What it does provide is an objective measure of your cardiorespiratory fitness and a valuable baseline for understanding how your body responds to increasingly demanding exercise.

When the full test is interpreted properly, it can also help guide your training intensity, identify your physiological thresholds and track whether your aerobic fitness is improving.

What Is VO₂max?

VO₂max is the maximum rate at which your body can consume oxygen during sustained exercise, expressed as millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min).

The result reflects the combined ability of your:

  • Lungs to take in oxygen
  • Heart and circulatory system to transport it
  • Blood to carry it
  • Working muscles to use it to produce energy

A higher VO2 max generally reflects a greater capacity for aerobic exercise and is also linked to greater longevity and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

How Is VO₂max Measured?

A treadmill VO₂max test measures how the body responds as exercise intensity progressively increases, providing an objective measure of aerobic capacity.

During a laboratory VO₂max test at FORGED by RF:

  • You wear a mask connected to a metabolic analyser.
  • You exercise on a treadmill or cycle ergometer while exercise intensity gradually increases
  • Oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output are measured breath‑by‑breath.
  • VO₂max is reached when oxygen consumption plateaus despite rising effort.

This provides objective data on your cardiovascular and muscular efficiency.

At FORGED by RF, VO₂max testing is conducted using the CORTEX 21 Performance T portable cardiopulmonary testing system which is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.

What Doesn’t VO₂max Tell You?

You may be wondering why we mentioned that VO₂max is important but doesn’t provide a complete prediction of endurance or race performance. Here’s why two athletes can have the same VO₂max but still produce very different results. Other factors include:

  • Your Physiological Thresholds
    • This influences how much capacity you can comfortably use during exercise before fatigue starts building up
    • This means someone with a lower VO₂max may still be able to run or cycle longer at a strong pace if they can use more of their aerobic capacity efficiently.
  • Your Movement Economy
    • How much oxygen you use at a particular running speed.
    • Two runners travelling at the same pace may require different amounts of energy. The more economical runner may be able to maintain that speed with less physiological strain.
    • That’s why we have our 3D gait analysis!
  • Your Muscular Strength and Endurance
    • This is especially relevant for HYROX, cycling, rowing or sports involving repeated accelerations or external loads.
    • Muscular strength and endurance help you maintain force, movement quality and performance as fatigue builds.
    • This is why aerobic conditioning should be supported by appropriate strength training. If building your strength and muscular endurance is part of your goal, ReFormd Personal Training offers individualised coaching and strength programmes that can complement the insights from your FORGED performance testing.
  • Technique and Pacing
    • Race strategy, movement skill, nutrition, environmental conditions and your ability to manage effort all influence performance.
    • VO₂max provides a valuable piece of the puzzle.

What Results Mean

Results aren’t just numbers, they’re actionable benchmarks:

  • VO₂max → reveals your aerobic ceiling, showing how efficiently your body can deliver and use oxygen during exercise. A higher VO₂max indicates greater endurance potential and cardiovascular fitness, while a lower VO₂max highlights areas for improvement in aerobic conditioning.
  • From your VO₂max, heart rate training zones can be determined, allowing you to train more efficiently and target the right intensities for endurance, recovery, and performance gains.

Here is a general guideline for a “Good” VO2max depending on your age and sex.

Practical Takeaways

  • Use VO₂max as a baseline, not the whole story.
  • Pair it with Lactate Threshold and 3D Gait Analysis for complete insight.
  • Re‑test every 8–12 weeks to track adaptations.
  • Apply results to training zones, recovery strategies, and nutrition planning.

The FORGED testing process follows three stages:

  • Assess your current performance through structured testing and book a VO₂max test here.
  • Our capable Exercise Specialists will analyse the results and explain what they mean
  • Apply these findings through practical recommendations or programming and integrate them into your training plan.
  • Re‑assess regularly to measure progress.

Who Can Benefit From A VO₂max Test

  • Runners & triathletes
    • Establish an aerobic baseline and provide individualised heart-rate zones to support endurance programming.
    • More experienced athletes may also benefit from combining the assessment with a Lactate Threshold Test or running analysis.
  • Cyclists
    • Can benefit equally by using an appropriate cycling setup so the assessment reflects the movement and muscles used in their sport.
    • Testing on a treadmill and bicycle may produce different results, so your exercise mode should be considered when interpreting and comparing scores.

VO₂max testing can be performed during sport-specific movements, giving athletes insight into how their aerobic system responds under the demands of HYROX-style exercise.
  • HYROX competitors:
    • HYROX requires aerobic fitness alongside running economy, strength endurance and efficient station work.
    • Research on recreational HYROX athletes found that more than 60% of total race time was spent running, highlighting how important aerobic fitness is to overall performance.
    • A standard VO₂max Test can establish your overall aerobic capacity. For more race-specific insights, FORGED by RF also offers a Singapore’s first HYROX VO₂ Assessment designed around the combined demands of running and functional stations.
  • Recreational athletes:
    • You don’t need to be an elite competitor to benefit from understanding your aerobic fitness.
    • Testing can help you establish a baseline, replace generic heart-rate estimates with more individualised information and track whether your training is producing meaningful changes.

Conclusion

VO₂max tells you the maximum rate at which your body can use oxygen during intense exercise. It provides a valuable measure of your aerobic capacity, an objective baseline for tracking progress and useful context for your cardiorespiratory fitness.

For many people, a standalone VO₂max Test is already a useful starting point. It can help you understand your current aerobic fitness, establish training zones and measure how your conditioning changes over time.

If you’re working towards a more specific performance or health goal, FORGED by RF also offers testing bundles that combine VO2max with complementary assessments for a broader view of your performance.

Some options include:

  1. FORGED Ultimate Bundle (VO2max + Lactate Threshold Test + Run-Specific Strength and Power Profiling & 3D Gait Analysis + Shoe Recommendation)
  2. PWR Biker’s Metabolic Bundle (Functional Threshold Power + VO2max Test)
  3. Signature Health Bundle (Visbody 3D Scan + Resting Metabolic Rate Test + VO2max Test and Functional Strength and Power Profiling)
